Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy
Got Pain? We can HELP!
What is a Physiotherapist? A physiotherapist is a university educated (Master’s degree) health professional and an important member of your health care team. Physiotherapists work in many areas including: orthopaedics, sports, cardiorespiratory, neurology…also work in many facilities, such as hospitals, long term care facilities, private clinics, and sports team/events.
What is expected from Physiotherapy Treatment?
When you see a physiotherapist, s/he will complete an extensive assessment that may include your health history, evaluation of pain and movement patterns, strength, joint range of motion, reflexes, sensation and cardiorespiratory status. In addition, the physiotherapist examines relevant X-rays, laboratory tests, medical records and surgical notes. Based on this assessment the physiotherapist establishes a diagnosis and works in partnership with you to develop individualized goals and treatment programs. Physiotherapy treatment can include therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, acupuncture, electrical modalities such as TENS or ultrasound, and assisting in making custom orthotics.
Benefits of Physiotherapy
A physiotherapist not only treats pain and what cause the pain, but also promotes independence. Emphasis is placed on what you can do for yourself and on education to prevent future injuries or disability. Physiotherapy can make a difference in an individual’s life, and his/her ability to live an active, healthy lifestyle. For many seniors, disabled or chronically ill people, physiotherapy is the key to restoring and maintaining a level of physical function that permits independent living. Physiotherapists keep British Columbians moving for life! Physiotherapy benefits include decreasing pain, improving joint mobility, increasing strength and coordination and improved cardiorespiratory function. Everyone can benefit from physiotherapy whether you are living with a chronic illness, recovering from a work injury or suffering after that weekend hockey game.
What conditions do Physiotherapists treat?
- Back/Neck & Joints Pain
- Pre & Post Operation Rehab
- Sports Injuries
- WCB/ICBC Injuries
- Vertigo
Common Questions
Do we need a doctor’s referral to seek physiotherapy services?
You do NOT need a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy. However, if you are going to use your health insurance to cover the cost of therapy, the insurance provider may ask you for a doctor’s referral.
How can I be sure that physiotherapy is right for my health problem?
Physiotherapy focuses on removing the cause of the problem as opposed to superficially treating the symptoms. This process may take some time, but the results are often more permanent with less chance of the disorder returning.
How long does each physiotherapy session last?
The first appointment usually takes about an hour for a full assessment. Subsequent treatments can be shorter or longer depending upon the condition and the treatment required. Subsequent physiotherapy treatments can be thirty to forty-five minutes.

Dr. Eva Idanwekhai MD
Dr. Eva Idanwekhai MD
I am Dr. Eva Idanwekhai, MBBS, CCFP, Chief Medical Director, and founder of the Canadian Medical Centre.
My love for family medical stems right from childhood in my beloved village where my dad worked as a dispenser. He owned the only chemist – small pharmacy that served all the neighbouring villages around. I used to ride on the back of my uncle’s motorbike with medications strapped to the trunk. I went around with him to sell his medications and also to treat minor illnesses. I will never forget the expectant faces of these villagers and the respect/satisfaction that my uncle commanded with each visit. It was then, I decided I would one day become a doctor to be able to treat illness and contribute positively to the health care community.
I completed my medical school at the University of Benin, Benin City Nigeria. I worked briefly abroad – China before immigrating to Canada I went through the tough task of qualifying to do my post graduate studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC). I completed a specialty program in family medicine at UBC. Along with it came certification with the College of Family physicians of Canada.
I started as a Canadian medical practitioner at Ocean Medical Clinic in West Vancouver. I proceeded to work in Interior Health Authority – Princeton General Hospital in Princeton BC for four years. There I worked in the Emergency department, acute care, long term care facility and family practice office. I served also as the acting Chief of Staff at the hospital for that time period. I had an excellent record in Princeton that after four years when I had to resign due to family commitment. I was granted the honour to ride in a vintage car with an open roof on the Canada Day parade to wave good-bye to the townspeople that lined the streets. This also gave the townspeople an opportunity to wish me well and thank me for a job well done. The mayor and elders of the town also hosted my family and I to a sumptuous farewell dinner party in the City Hall.
For more than one year since I left Princeton, I have been practicing in Surrey, BC until this glorious opportunity came to set up this centre.
Academically, I am an Examiner with Medical Council of Canada in various clinical Examination, Examiner in Family Medicine with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and I serve also as an interviewer of Prospective Canada Residents for family practice department of UBC.
I am also a clinical instructor with UBC in the Family Medicine department serving to educate Residents and medical students. I hold an appointment as a clinical preceptor of the Clinical Teaching Unit of family medicine Surrey Memorial Hospital with full hospital privileges.
At First Canadian Medical Centre we have a dedicated, professional and experienced team of Physician, Nurses, Allied health and Medical office assistants (MOA) that work as a unit to serve and take care of your health needs.
